Pyrgos, the old capital of Santorini, is a village in the hinterland of the island and was built on its highest point, the top of Mount Prophet Elias. It was the capital of the island till 1800. In the center of the village, you can find the medieval castle which still retains the characteristics of the Venetian empire: the Byzantine churches, the medieval houses and castles that create a strong sense of power and prosperity. The Castle is well-maintained, with houses built amphitheatrically around it. It is worth visiting the monastery of Prophet Elias, one of the oldest churches in the island, probably dated from the 10th century. The monastery has a remarkable and rare old library with old manuscripts religious books, many of which are unique. While strolling in the vilage, the visitors have the opportunity to visit the small, beautiful and traditional cafés and restaurants located in the central square and around the village. In Pyrgos,the visitor has the possibility to taste and enjoy the most rare and special dishes of award-winning chefs and restaurants of the international cuisine and the most authentic and traditional dishes of the local and Greek cuisine.
